Accreditations and Recognitions

Our dedication to our Mission to serve "with the greatest care and love" can be found in many of the awards and recognitions earned by medical center staff and volunteers. Those honors include:

  • In 2010, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center achieved Magnet recognition for the second time, an accomplishment achieved by only two percent of the hospitals nationwide.  Magnet is a designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) that recognizes excellence in nursing practice and quality patient care. It is the highest award for nursing available in the United States.

  • OSF Saint Anthony is the first healthcare facility in the region to achieve Stroke Center certification by earning the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers.
  • The Medical Center has been designated the "Alzheimer's Disease Primary Provider Site" by Southern Illinois University Center for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders and the Illinois Department of Public Health. The OSF Illinois Neurosciences Institute offers a Memory Disorders Center that provides assessment, education and resources for patients with memory disorders and their families.  OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is the first hospital in Rockford to achieve this designation. It also offers a Headache Clinic as well as the Memory Disorders Center
  • By demonstrating excellence in healthcare quality in its outpatient diabetes services, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center was awarded the Gold Seal of Approval and has achieved Disease-Specific Care Certification from the Joint Commission for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.  OSF Saint Anthony was the second healthcare facility in the state of Illinois to earn disease-specific certification for diabetes  and has achieved re-certification since then. 
  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center has earned a U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Medal of Honor for Organ Donation five years in a row (2005-09). To earn a Medal of Honor, hospitals must achieve at least a 75 percent donation rate, far higher than the national average of 60 percent in 2006. 
  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center was recognized as a leader in safety practices by the Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH), a Chicago-based, non-profit group, for being one of three Illinois hospitals that fully complies with 27 safety practices endorsed by the National Quality Forum.  
  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is the first medical center in Rockford, the fourth in Illinois and the 88th in the nation to achieve accreditation as a Chest Pain Center.   It is also the first healthcare facility in the region to receive full Cycle II Chest Pain Center accreditation from the Accreditation Review Committee. This achievement demonstrates that the Medical Center provides a full-spectrum of emergency cardiac care, rapid diagnosis and fast track treatment.
  • The OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care earned a three-year Approval Award with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer.
  • Physicians affiliated with OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center were the first in the Rockford area to perform open-heart, valve-replacement and beating heart bypass surgeries. More than 2,200 cardiac catheterization and 500 heart surgeries take place here each year.
    Cardiothoracic surgeons of the Regional Heart Institute of OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center performed the first transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR) in the region.  TMR is a procedure used to treat inoperable heart disease in people with angina.
  • MammoSite, a minimally invasive, internal radiation treatment option for some women with early-stage breast cancer, was provided for the first time in the region by radiation oncologists at the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care in the spring of 2005.
  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center was the site of the first artificial spinal disc implantation in the area in 2005.  The new surgery is a motion-preserving alternative to lumbar spinal fusion surgery.
  • In July of 2005, Dr. James Locher, cardiothoracic surgeon affiliated with the OSF Regional Heart Institute and Rockford Surgical Services, Ltd., became the first surgeon in Illinois to use a microwave ablation treatment called MicroMaze, a closed chest procedure, to treat atrial fibrillation (AF). OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is the only facility in Illinois to provide its patients with this innovative, fast, safe, effective and minimally invasive FDA-approved technology.
  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center was the first hospital in the Rockford area to offer digital mammography beginning in March of 2006.
  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is ranked among the nation's top 200 hospitals for its coding/billing accuracy, as recognized in the third annual "Top 200 Coding Hospitals in the U.S." report conducted by Ingenix, a leading health information company.
  • In 2009, OSF HealthCare was named one of the 20 most integrated healthcare systems in the country by Verispan, a national research and information management company, and reported in Modern Healthcare magazine.
  • Design Award for Ambulatory Care Center from HEALTHCARE DESIGN - 2003
  • National Quality Initiative Volunteer Participant
  • Pinnacle Awards for communications and marketing programs from Illinois Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations - 2001- 2009
  • Telly Awards for television commercials - 2002 and 2004
  • Top 50 Hospitals for Respiratory Disorders from U.S. News & World Report - 2000
  • Rockford in Bloom Awards for Saint Francis Courtyard and Pat D. Pepe Garden of Hope, Center for Cancer Care
  • AHA Recognition for Auxiliary's Fire and Burn Prevention Program.
